KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Ron Hoffmann
Alberta’s Senior Representative – Asia Pacific Basin

Ron Hoffmann will review the major issues and trends unfolding in Asia and what they mean for expanded job creation and prosperity in Alberta. He will identify specific opportunities available to Alberta businesses and entrepreneurs and discuss strategies for business success. He will pay particular attention to how Hong Kong is reinventing itself as an innovation hub and two-way gateway to the rapidly transforming China market, but also as a key element in China’s bold One Belt One Road regional initiative. Ron will outline why there has never been a more compelling time for Alberta to capitalize on what a modernizing 21st century Asia has to offer, including exporting the goods and services in demand by Asia’s rapidly growing and tech-savvy urban middle class.

Ron Hoffmann, appointed Alberta’s Senior Representative for the Asia Pacific Basin in the fall of 2014, is a western Canadian who has dedicated most of his professional life advancing Canada’s interests on the world stage. He has spent much of his diplomatic career in Asia, including serving as Ambassador to Afghanistan during the height of Canada’s military, diplomatic and development deployment. He was Ambassador to Thailand, with cross-accreditation to Burma, Cambodia and Laos, and served in the Canadian Embassy in Beijing as Commercial and Economic Counsellor. Earlier in his career, he held key trade positions in Canadian missions in Johannesburg and The Hague, and more recently in London where he served in the Canadian High Commission as Minister (Political and Public Affairs).

Mr. Hoffmann works closely with Alberta's international offices across the region to promote high level and outcome oriented engagement among Alberta government and business leaders and Asian counterparts. He is Alberta's senior voice in Asia, fostering greater awareness of opportunities to establish and expand trade, investment, innovation and governance partnerships.
